Steamboat Springs: Top 10 attractions in the Summer

If you think that Steamboat Springs, Colorado is only a ski town, think again.  Summer in this laid-back mountain town is incredible.  There is truly something for everyone whether you want to pack in the activities or to simply relax in the fresh mountain air.

I grew up in Steamboat and have seen the town transform, but what makes it unique to the other Colorado mountain towns is that it’s roots run deep and we have a strong local base that values our history. Many of the iconic Steamboat staples are still the top attractions and tourists and locals alike mingle in these places together.

Here is a list of my 10 favorite things that should not be missed if you’re planning a summer escape to our beautiful mountain town.

Of course this is number one on my list, but even if I didn’t own the company, I would still put this at the very top. =) I grew up watching the balloons in the air and I will never forget my first ride in the balloon. Floating above the stunning landscape that we call home is an incredible experience!! It is a rare find to be able to balloon in such a breathtakingly beautiful valley.

When you fly, you will launch right next to the Yampa River, in between Emerald Mountain and the Steamboat Ski Area. Flying in a balloon in this setting is indescribable. The anticipation is exhilarating as you watch the balloon inflate. The noise from the fans and heat from the burners gets your senses tingling and you might feel a few jitters as you climb into the balloon, but once you slowly lift off the ground and realize that you are in the air, the silence surrounds you.

Because the balloon floats with the wind, you are able to enjoy the emerald green mountains with a peaceful rapture and can hear the river as it flows below. Bud, the pilot, will fill you with fun facts about the balloon and the sights that you see during your adventure in the sky, while you watch the chase crew navigating the roads below to be there upon your arrival back down to the earth. Ending with a champagne toast really tops off the experience and I can’t think of a more memorable or perfect start to a day in Steamboat Springs.

This beautiful area is an absolute must do while you’re in Steamboat. The hike to get to the 283 feet of water cascading over the cliff face is up an easy, paved ¼ mile trail.

This hike will take you through the Aspen forest to an overlook where you can see the entirety of the second tallest waterfall in the state. You also have the option to hike down to the base of the falls to be among the giant boulders at the base of a picturesque wooden bridge. This waterfall is so scenic that it was once featured on the Coors can.

If you want a challenging and remarkable hike, you can cross the bridge and continue 2.5 miles up the rocks and through the trees to the Upper Fish Creek Falls. The second falls aren’t massive, but the hike is well worth it. It’s an amazing way to take in the Rocky Mountains as you traverse through the switchbacks and up the rocks throughout the Fish Creek Canyon.

The peak summer months can get crowded, so be prepared to see other people enjoying the view and be mindful of the different skill levels on the trail. Be kind! And offer to take family pictures for people at the bridge.

Strawberry Park Hot Springs is a short and beautiful drive through the valley of Strawberry park where the large stone pools blend seamlessly into the mountainside.  These natural mineral springs have a year-round average temperature of 104 and with the multiple different pools, you can find the perfect temperature.  If you’re feeling brave, you can even take a cold plunge into the fresh, icy river flowing next to the scenic pools!

The surroundings truly can’t be beat and is worth the 15 minute drive.  In winter, snow tires or chains are necessary.

Reservations are required year-round and they only accept cash so make sure you plan ahead, but be prepared to melt your tensions away as you immerse yourself into the mountains.

Yampa River Botanic Park is a hidden gem where you can escape the crowds and slow down to enjoy the beautifully designed garden paths that surround a picturesque pond full of lily pads.  The park has multiple different paths and a large green grassy area perfect for a picnic.

The park offers multiple different activities including music, yoga, kids storytime and plays, so check the local happenings or website to time your visit.

The park is right next to the Yampa River and the core trail so it is a perfect destination to bike or walk from town.

You might not think about visiting the ski area in the summer, but it is not to be missed. Not only is riding the gondola a fun adventure, but it will take you to the mid-point of Mt. Werner where you can grab lunch at the Oasis bar and grill and take in the scenery.

You can always hike up the mountain and take the gondola down for free, but if a large hike isn’t what you’re looking for there are lots of shorter trails that start from the gondola drop off point.

Check the schedule to see if the sunset happy hour is happening!  It’s a great time to ride the gondola and watch the sunset with live music and a drink in hand.

The Yampa River conveniently runs right through town and can be enjoyed in a multitude of different ways.  The water levels fluctuate significantly, so your plans will depend on the season.  Our spring run-off causes a giant surge in the water flow and the Yampa becomes a playground for the more adventurous kayakers, boaters and occasional paddleboard.

As the levels drop, the tubes and paddleboards come out in droves. You can choose to rent a tube and join in the floating fun or choose any one of the cozy riverside benches to watch the river adventurers.

All of the restaurants that line the Yampa River are great places to grab a bite and enjoy the water. We love the beautiful yard, fine wines and excellent steak at E3 and really everything about Taco Cabo.  Check back soon for a full post about all our favorite restaurants!

Emerald Mountain is aptly named due to it’s lush green mountainside.  It’s a mecca of hiking and biking trails leading to a beautiful overlook that faces town and the Steamboat ski area. Since it is conveniently located right in town it’s the easiest hike to get to, with the best view.

For bikers looking to climb this is an easier option than the ski area and has trails that loop into the trees and out onto the overlooks.  I’ll write a more detailed biking post soon!  For now, the easiest climb is to head to the bluffs and then choose to loop into the other trails from there.

One of my personal favorite activities, and Steamboat is a biking paradise.

Emerald mountain is the most conveniently located and most mellow of the options.  It’s a great cross-country course with a vast number of trails for it’s size.  You can choose a short ride or decide to climb up and over the hill to the backside and around for an epic 26-mile loop.

If you’re into gravel riding, we have the champagne gravel of gravel roads and one of the most sought-after races in the world, Steamboat Gravel.

The steamboat resort is an ever expanding and great option for close to town biking.  It hosts some cross-country trails and downhill specific ones.  While not yet top of it’s class, the downhill park has trails for beginners and experts and has enough to keep me going back for more!

Steamboat Springs has its roots as a ranching community and the best way to get your taste of the cowboy life is to head to the Rodeo. With barrel racing and bull riding you will certainly be entertained.

The Rodeo was a part of Steamboat’s culture even before the town was incorporated and has newspaper citings dating back to 1898.  It continues to be an exhilarating event and it’s small size allows you to get up close to the action.
